If you grew up as a young football fan in the mid-1990s, you’ll surely remember that unforgettable feeling of tearing open a 25p pack of Merlin Premier League stickers.
Sure, you may have ended up with another John Moncur, but nothing beat that first glimpse of a rare shiny.
Fast forward to 2026, and football trading cards have completely taken over our house.
Our two boys, Ryan (8) and Mason (6), are absolutely obsessed. It’s all they want to spend their pocket money on, all they ask for on their birthdays, and they’ve racked up countless hours studying pack-opening videos on YouTube.
They carry their binders and tins everywhere, never missing a chance to trade on the playground. But the price difference between my childhood sticker albums and today's premium Match Attax packs is hefty - to say the least.
I knew very little about the modern Topps Premier League and Match Attax scene until earlier this year, so I've put together this brief guide for fellow parents who want to understand the basics.
Topps Premier League vs Match Attax: What's the Difference?
Before buying anything, it helps to know what you are actually looking at on the shelf.
Match Attax is a trading card game designed primarily for the playground. The packs are slightly cheaper, and the cards are colourful and covered in stats so kids can actually play matches against each other.
Topps Premier League cards (and their premium 'Chrome' versions) are traditional collecting cards. They cost a little more per pack, but they focus on glossy finishes, rarity, and a much higher chance of pulling autographed or serial-numbered cards.
In the eyes of our boys, both sets of cards are equally valuable.
So, Is the £9.99 Starter Pack Actually Worth It?
Let’s take a closer look at what a £10 Match Attax starter pack gets you in 2026.
The Starter Pack is essentially the gateway to the new season. It’s also a necessary purchase if you want to keep your house slightly tidier!
Here’s exactly what is inside the 2026/27 20th Anniversary edition:
The 32-Page Binder: This is where the cards live, meaning they won't be scattered all over the living room.
The Checklist Magazine: A massive help for tracking which cards they actually need, so you aren't buying endless duplicates.
Three Booster Packs: Enough to get their collection started immediately so they can rip some foil right away.
The Exclusives: It includes a guaranteed Infinity card and a special 20th Anniversary Limited Edition card. (Translation: shiny cards that will make them very happy!).
The Game Pitch & Tactic Card: For the kids who actually want to play the tabletop game, though in our house, it's all about the collecting and trading.
How to Spot the Best Cards in 2026/27
Trying to understand which cards are actually valuable can feel like learning a new language.
Thankfully, Topps has made it slightly easier for us parents this year by printing the rarity symbols directly on the starter pack wrappers.
I snapped a picture of the rarity guide on our starter packs. Here’s your quick translation:
1-5 Stars: This is the core shiny system. A 1-star (★) is Rare, but if they pull a 5-star (★★★★★) Hyper-Rare, expect some serious celebrating.
The Elite Tier: Beyond the stars, look out for Limited Edition icons and the ultra-elusive 'Mystical' rarity. These are the cards that you want to be protecting immediately!
Autographs & Relics: If they manage to find a genuinely signed autograph card or a relic card featuring a piece of a match-worn shirt, you've hit the jackpot. The boys have pulled a couple of these in previous years, and they are undoubtedly the crown jewels of any collection. Get them straight into a protective sleeve!
The Smart Way to Collect: Getting More for Your Money
Once the Starter Pack is sorted, it can be a real battle of wills.
The boys are always tempted to blow their weekly pocket money on loose booster packs, but we try to encourage them to save up until they can afford a Mega Tin instead.
If they want to build their collection quickly, steer them toward the Multipacks or Mega Tins.
They cost a bit more upfront, but the price-per-card is better, and they often include exclusive Limited Edition cards you can't get in standard packs.
Protecting the Collection
Finally, if they do pull one of those ultra-rare Mystical cards or an autograph, don't let it get stuffed into a pocket!
It’s definitely worth picking up a pack of protective card sleeves or rigid top-loaders online so their best pulls stay pristine.

The Verdict
The 1994 Merlin Premier League sticker album helped ignite my lifelong passion for football. A passion that ultimately led to me studying journalism at university before embarking on a career writing about the game for a living.
Now, 32 years later, history is repeating itself with my own children, whose knowledge and love for football has grown exponentially thanks to Topps Premier League and Match Attax cards.
While the cards might cost a lot more than 25p a pack these days, there's nothing quite like seeing the excitement on the boys’ faces when they rip open a pack and pull a player they love.
