2026 World Cup Bedtime Guide: Child-Friendly UK Kick-Off Times

The 2026 World Cup will see a record 104 matches played between June 11 and July 19 due to the increase from 32 to 48 teams.

Because the showpiece international tournament is being co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, many of the kick-off times for a UK audience aren’t particularly child-friendly.

My seven-year-old is usually allowed to stay up until 8:45pm on school nights when there’s a particularly interesting Premier League or Champions League game on TV, but many of the matches at this summer’s World Cup kick off much later.

Using official tournament data, here’s a parent-friendly guide to the matches your football-mad kids can actually watch this summer.

Opening 2026 World Cup Match

Thursday, June 11: Mexico vs South Africa (8pm)

The first game of a new World Cup is always a big deal, even if the game itself on paper doesn’t look particularly appetising.

8pm on a school night is standard for a big midweek game.

Best World Cup Games For Kids (5pm & 6pm Kick-Offs)

World Cup 2026 Match Schedule

The holy grail for parents of young kids at primary school age. Most of these games will finish right around bedtime.

Sunday, June 14: Germany vs Curacao (6pm)

Curacao play their first ever World Cup match against Jamal Musiala and co.

Monday, June 15:Spain vs Cape Verde (5pm)

There could be plenty of goals for Spain in this one.

Wednesday, June 17: Portugal vs DR Congo (6pm)

The kids get to watch Cristiano Ronaldo's side early in the evening.

Thursday, June 18: Czech Republic vs South Africa (5pm)

Another one to watch straight after school.

Saturday, June 20: Netherlands vs Sweden (6pm)

A massive, colourful European clash on a Saturday teatime.

Sunday, June 21: Spain vs Saudi Arabia (5pm)

Another perfect Sunday slot for a top-tier team.

Monday, June 22: Argentina vs Austria (6pm)

A great opportunity for the kids to witness the magnificent Lionel Messi in action.

Tuesday, June 23: Portugal vs Uzbekistan (6pm)

Another chance for the kids to watch Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and other Portugal stars.

Friday & Saturday Night Treats (8pm Kick-Offs)

8pm games finish around 9:50pm - normally too late for a school night - but these games fall on Fridays or weekends, making them ideal for a family pizza-and-football night.

Friday, June 12: Canada vs Bosnia & Herzegovina (8pm)

Not the juiciest Friday night fixture but football-mad kids hoping for a later-than-normal bedtime won’t complain.

Saturday, June 13: Qatar vs Switzerland (8pm)

The first major primetime Saturday game of the tournament. Again, not the most exciting fixture on paper but it may surprise.

Friday, June 19: United States vs Australia (8pm)

Has the potential to be a highly energetic, fast-paced match the kids will enjoy.

Friday, June 26: Norway vs France (8pm)

Erling Haaland vs Kylian Mbappe? Yes, please.

Friday, June 26: Senegal vs Iraq (8pm)

Let’s face it: we’ll all be watching Norway vs France instead.

Other 8pm Kick-Offs

It’s worth knowing about the other 2026 World Cup group stage games that kick off at 8pm.

Monday, June 15: Belgium vs Egypt (8pm)

A chance to see Mohamed Salah against the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Thibaut Courtois.

Sunday, June 21: Belgium vs Iran (8pm)

Belgium again! This time against Iran.

Wednesday, June 24: Bosnia & Herzegovina vs Qatar (8pm)

Any kids who choose to watch this one are seriously passionate about football!

Wednesday, June 24: Switzerland vs Canada (8pm)

Could be worth a watch.

Tracking the GOATs: Messi & Ronaldo Full Schedule

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo shirts

Your kids will be desperate to know when Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are playing. This will be their LAST appearances at a World Cup.

Lionel Messi’s 2026 World Cup Fixtures

  • Wednesday, June 17: Argentina vs Algeria (2am). Slap bang in the middle of the night. One for the morning highlights package before school.

  • Monday, June 22: Argentina vs Austria (6pm). A much kinder time for kids to watch the reigning world champions.

  • Sunday, June 28: Jordan vs Argentina (3am). Argh! Another brutal kick-off time for UK audiences.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s 2026 World Cup Fixtures

  • Wednesday, June 17: Portugal vs DR Congo (6pm). An absolute dream teatime slot on a school night.

  • Tuesday, June 23: Portugal vs Uzbekistan (6pm). 6pm again - get in!

  • Sunday, June 28: Colombia vs Portugal (12:30am). Too late to watch live, but a potential Sunday morning breakfast watch.

England’s Fixtures: School Night Dilemma

England 2026 World Cup Fixtures

Here’s when Thomas Tuchel’s squad play their three Group L fixtures.

Wednesday, June 17: England vs Croatia (9pm)

A massive game, but a 10:50pm finish on a school night isn’t ideal. A strict half-time bedtime may have to suffice for our seven-year-old. The alternative is a very tired Thursday morning.

Tuesday, June 23: England vs. Ghana (9pm)

Not again! Another 9pm kick-off on a school night, so the same rules as the Croatia game apply.

Saturday, June 27: Panama vs. England (10pm)

Looking at a midnight finish, but at least it's a Saturday night!

Scotland’s Fixtures: Not Exactly Child-Friendly

Scotland 2026 World Cup Fixtures

All three of Scotland’s fixtures are at awkward times for a UK audience.

Sunday, June 14: Haiti vs. Scotland (2am)

Sadly, Scotland’s opening game of the 2026 World Cup takes place slap bang in the middle of the night for a UK audience.

Friday, June 19: Scotland vs. Morocco (11pm)

Too late for young kids, but older ones might get a Friday pass.

Wednesday, June 24: Scotland vs. Brazil (11pm)

A real shame this one is on at 11pm. Scotland fan or not, this is one we’d all love to watch, but the game won’t finish until just before 1am.
